Also the Ukrainians were conquered by Russia centuries ago, like the Kurds were conquered by the Turks centuries ago, they were treaded in the same harsh way by the authorities but was a coherent country, i.e. people that belong to a certain region, the Kiev Russ, which even was in fact the origin of Russia, who, as the Kurds have their own culture, including the language, and therefore, by self-determination, have much more the moral right to build again their own state on territory where they had their country before and not on foreign land.
Within the historic Ukraine and with regards to the Crimea or some eastern parts a Donetsk or Luhansk where the majority is Russian and wants to belong to Russia the case looks different.
The Crimea:

The Crimea:
On the Crimean peninsula, which was long time Russian, conquered though, until Nikita Chruschtschow, the Russian president with Ukrainian background, gave it as a gift to the Ukraine in 1954, the people decided in an undisputed and accepted democratic referendum and therefore in self determination to rejoin Russia, which, on the other hand, was willing to reintegrate their former territory. The case seems to be clear and just. However; as a gift should not be demanded by the one who gave it the case can be seen differently too. It is a question on honor!
Notwithstanding, on the other hand it is utmost to mention that the Ukraine was inclined not to permit Russians any longer to lease the harbor of Sevastopol there but, on the other hand, tended to lease it to the US army instead who already, according to an article, planned to renovate some buildings there, something the Russians might have read as well. To prevent them from using it might be one thing but provoking a stronger neighbor like this is not acceptable.
Donetsk and Luhansk:
The Donetsk and Luhansk region, the by now so called People s Republic of Donetsk or Luhansk, cannot be claimed by Russia at all, regardless to what the people there want. It has always been part of the Ukraine and therefor Russian people should be free to move back to Russia, where they once emigrated from, if they want so but not to make historic Ukrainian land, where Ukrainian lived with their culture and even their own language, a Russian dialect, Russian land. Again; concerning the Crimea the case looks differently.
